Seguin, Navarro and Marion athletes qualify for state track meet

(Seguin) — A total of six student-athletes from Seguin, Navarro and Marion high schools punched their tickets to the UIL state track and field meet at the University of Texas later this month following strong performances at regional competition over the weekend.

Seguin freshman Paige Leyendecker qualified for state in the girls long jump, earning the regional silver medal at the Class 5A Region IV meet at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio with a leap of 17 feet, 8.5 inches.

Junior Adrian Rangel also claimed silver for the Matadors, qualifying in the boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:17.45.

(Kingsville) — Two Navarro Lady Panthers earned their way to Austin at the Class 4A regional meet at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Sophomore Emerson Cochran finished second in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 56.35. Cochran made the state meet as a freshman last year as well, finishing sixth in the event.

Senior Lilia Flo qualified in two events. She took silver in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:10.00, then won gold in the girls 3,200-meter run, crossing in 11:02.56. Flo also competed at the state cross country meet last fall, finishing 18th.

(Seguin) — A pair of Marion High School pole vaulters qualified for state at the Class 3A Region IV meet in Seguin.

Senior Kaitlyn Rackley won gold in the girls pole vault, clearing 12 feet. Rackley was the state silver medalist in the event a year ago.

Junior Brody Fizer claimed gold in the boys pole vault. Fizer placed ninth at the state meet last year.

The UIL state track and field meet is scheduled for May 14-16 at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium in Austin.
