Voters to decide fate of Navarro’s $65 million bond issue

Voters to decide fate of Navarro's $65 million bond issue

(Geronimo) — Among the most closely watched items on the ballot for this week’s May 2 Uniform Election is the proposed $65 million bond election in Navarro ISD.

The Navarro ISD bond proposal includes a single-proposition package aimed at accommodating rapid enrollment growth and addressing facility needs across the district. District leaders say the $65 million measure is designed to fund campus improvements and expansion projects without increasing the district’s current tax rate.

The proposal includes roughly $5.4 million for facility reinvestment projects, including roof and HVAC upgrades at Navarro Elementary and the district annex, both of which are tied to plans for a future early childhood center. Another $57.5 million would go toward junior high expansion, including additional classrooms, a cafetorium, kitchen improvements, gym updates and site infrastructure work such as drainage and fencing. The remaining $1.9 million would fund transportation needs, including buses and expanded secure parking for the district fleet.

Navarro ISD officials say the bond package is intended to prepare for continued growth, with the district projected to add between 250 and 350 students annually over the next decade.

While district leaders say the proposal would not raise the current tax rate, state law still requires all school bond ballots in Texas to carry language stating that the measure is a property tax increase, even in cases where no rate increase is expected.

Meanwhile, the Navarro ISD is not the only school district in Guadlaupe County proposing new bond projects. A $295 million bond package will also go before voters in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD.

Polls on Saturday will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Any registered voter in Guadalupe County, despite where they live, can vote at the following six locations. Those locations include the Seguin Elections Office, Redemptive Grace Ministries in New Braunfels, Elections Office Annex in Schertz, Selma City Hall, Marion ISD Tonde Room, and the Geronimo VFW Post 8456.
