(Yoakum) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs rallied from behind to defeat Columbus 5-4 in game two of their area round playoff Wednesday in Yoakum, forcing a decisive game three in the series.
Marion dropped the opener of the doubleheader to the Lady Cardinals 7-0, then found themselves trailing 4-2 after four innings in game two. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Madi Peavler singled to score Meadow Hernandez from second, pulling the Lady Bulldogs within one.
Marion took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth when Zayah Della Ragione singled home Ellie Parker from second to put the Lady Bulldogs in front 5-4. It was Della Ragione’s second RBI single of the game — she had also driven home Brooke Stevens in the second inning for Marion’s first run.
Della Ragione also earned the win in the circle, coming on in relief of starter Cambry Dojahn in the third inning. After Columbus plated four runs in the first three frames, Della Ragione kept the Lady Cardinals off the scoreboard for the final four innings.
Game three is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Marion High School. The winner advances to the Class 3A Region IV semifinals.
(San Antonio) — The Marion Bulldog baseball team is moving on to the area round after sweeping Crystal City in a bi-district doubleheader in San Antonio on Wednesday night.
Marion shut out the Javelinas 3-0 in game one behind six strong innings from starter Huck Schoenvogel. Gage Hamilton came on in relief to earn the save, retiring the final three batters in the seventh.
The Bulldogs completed the sweep with a 12-1 rout in game two. Marion led 2-1 heading into the fifth inning before erupting for seven runs to put the game away. The rally was capped by a two-out, two-RBI single from Casey Cloud, followed by an Eli Parker triple that scored Cloud and pushed the Marion advantage to 9-1.
Eli Parker also started on the mound, allowing one run in the first inning before tossing three scoreless frames. Gage Hamilton worked scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, and Jack Wells closed it out in the seventh to complete the sweep.
Marion will face either Columbus or Karnes City in the area round next week.
