Lady Matadors earn multiple all-district accolades following playoff season

(Seguin) — Phaedra Douglas, a freshman guard who averaged 14 points per game in her first season of varsity basketball, led the Seguin Lady Matadors named to the All-District 27-5A girls basketball team released this week.

Douglas was named Newcomer of the Year by the district’s coaches. In addition to leading the Lady Mats in scoring, Douglas was the team’s top rebounder, pulling down 6.2 boards per contest.

Sophomore guards Jaz Gil and Faith Franklin were each selected to the all-district team for the second straight year. Gil earned first-team honors while Franklin earned second-team honors. Gil averaged 8.1 points per game and led Seguin in steals, averaging 3.1 per game. Franklin averaged 7.8 points per contest and led the Lady Mats in assists at 2.6 per game.

Garnering all-district honorable mention honors were a trio of sophomore forwards: Aubrey Glenewinkel, Imani Winn, and Sha’La Cannon-Franklin. Glenewinkel averaged 3.1 points per game, Winn averaged 4.2, and Cannon-Franklin averaged 3.5 points per contest.

Earning Academic All-District recognition for the Lady Matadors were Franklin, Gil, Glenewinkel, Cannon-Franklin, Bryana Arce, Genavie Deleon, Trinity Deremer, Tiana Hastings, Vida Hernandez, Amariah Perez, Khloe McKnight, Jesslynn Hennessy, and Gabby Flores-Sanchez.

Seguin finished the season in fourth place in District 27-5A. The Lady Matadors won 16 overall games this season and qualified for the playoff for the first time since 2022, falling in the bi-district round to San Antonio Southwest.

The Lady Mats are led by head coach Veronda Kendall, a former Texas A&M basketball player, who completed her fourth season at the helm of the Seguin girls basketball program.
