Matadors reach triple digits in rout of San Antonio Burbank

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors put on an offensive showcase in their final home game of the season, eclipsing the century mark in a 101-25 rout of San Antonio Burbank on Friday night at Goldie Harris Gym.

Senior Tavien Miles, playing his final home game as a Matador, opened the scoring with a three-pointer. Burbank answered with a triple of their own, but that would be the Bulldogs’ last points of the quarter.

Seguin erupted for 30 unanswered points spanning the end of the first quarter and the opening two minutes of the second period to seize a commanding 33-3 lead. Junior Mikey Hernandez knocked down three triples during the first-quarter stretch of the run.

The Matadors maintained their intensity throughout the half, building a 55-10 advantage at intermission. Hernandez drilled five three-pointers before the break en route to seven in the game and a team-high 23 points. Junior Jay Menchaca scored 10 points in the first half and finished with 14.

Seguin added 28 more points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 83-17 heading into the final frame. Miles contributed seven points in the period and finished with 14 for the game.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Noah King connected on a three-pointer to push the Matadors over the century mark. King finished with 14 points, including three from beyond the arc.

Freshman Nathan Walter added 12 points for the Mats, junior Jio Parra poured in eight, and senior Abron Acuna scored six in his final home game. The Matadors are now 7-8 in District 27-5A. They will close out their season on the road Tuesday night looking to finish at the .500 mark in district when they take on San Antonio Brackenridge.

In other area games Friday night:

(Seguin) — The Navarro Panthers clinched a playoff berth with a 63-15 rout of San Antonio Memorial at the new Navarro High School gymnasium. Navarro secured the fourth playoff spot from District 28-4A and will compete in the bi-district round beginning February 23.

(San Antonio) — Marion, ranked 13th in the state in Class 3A, captured its 25th victory of the season with a 74-53 win at Young Men’s Leadership Academy. The Bulldogs have already clinched a postseason berth and remain in first place in District 27-3A.
