(Seguin) — The Seguin Lady Matadors are heading to the playoffs.

“It’s exciting, and I’m so happy for these girls,” Lady Mat head coach Veronda Kendall said after Seguin’s 51-30 home victory over Edison on Friday night clinched a playoff berth. “They’ve been putting in a lot of work, and I’m just happy to see it pay off for them.”

The victory secured Seguin’s first playoff berth under the fourth-year head coach. The Lady Mats started the game on fire, forcing several Edison turnovers that led to easy baskets and an 11-0 lead early in the first quarter. Seguin continued the suffocating defense into the second quarter with a 15-0 run, jumping out to a 22-point lead at 27-5.

Jaz Gil took advantage of open looks following the turnovers, knocking down a pair of three-pointers during the second-quarter run. Gill finished with a game-high 14 points, including four three-pointers.

“You can’t leave her open,” Kendall said of her sophomore guard. “If you leave her open, she’s a pure shooter. She works a lot on her shot, and if you’re going to give her space, she will knock it down. Very high shooting percentage. We can rely on her for that, and she’s still young!”

Fellow sophomore Vida Hernandez chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Freshman Phaedra Douglas added eight, and sophomore Faith Franklin contributed seven.

The victory was Seguin’s fourth straight. Seguin has won 16 games overall this season—the most in Kendall’s tenure and one more than the 15 Seguin won last season. The Lady Mats are 9-6 in district play and have clinched the fourth playoff spot in District 27-5A.

Seguin will finish the regular season next Tuesday when they play at San Antonio Highlands. The Lady Matadors will compete in the bi-district round, which is scheduled to begin February 16.
