(Seguin) — The story of Jakes Colony as one of Texas’ historic Freedom Colonies will be highlighted during a special gathering this weekend.
A Jake’s Colony Commemoration and Descendants’ Birthday Celebration is scheduled for Saturday along Jakes Colony Road.
Organizers say Jake’s Colony is one of about 550 Freedom Colonies established in Texas following the end of slavery in Texas.
Descendants of those who were part of Jakes Colony Church and School, Sweet Homes Church and School, Zion Hill Church and School, Guadalupe College, and tribal nations’ indigenous people in Guadalupe County and surrounding areas are encouraged to attend and share their stories.
The celebration runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 1090 Jakes Colony Road in the Seguin area.
