(Converse) — The Seguin Matadors are on the road tonight for a key District 13-5A matchup against the Wagner Thunderbirds.
Seguin (3-4) is 1-3 in district. Wagner (3-4) is 2-2. The T-birds are currently tied with Boerne Champion for the fourth and final playoff spot in the district.
Last week, Seguin fell to defending state champion Smithson Valley. Despite the loss, the Matador offense did not turn the ball over against a physical Ranger defense. But Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says his receivers need to improve their pass catching.
“We just had too many drops. That’s the thing that hurts,” Dailey said. “That’s what we really stressed that this week, just complete the play. But they executed well. That’s the first time we haven’t turned the ball over against Smithson Valley in four years. That’s a positive.
“Catch the football. That’s an easy thing to clean up. We showed the kids on video how well they executed against a defense that really disguises a bunch. And we didn’t miss a read, but we had 15 drops, and you can’t do that.”
Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey comes into tonight with 8,248 career passing yards. The senior is just 182 yards away from moving into the top five in San Antonio area career passing yards. Former Boerne quarterback Rashawn Galloway is currently number five with 8,430 yards.
The all-time passing leader is former Steele quarterback Chad Warner, who threw for 9,439 yards. Dailey would need to pass for 1,192 yards the rest of the season to become the San Antonio area all-time career passing yards leader.
Dailey is also four touchdown passes away from 100 in his career. Seguin and Wagner kick off at 7 p.m. tonight at D.W. Rutledge Stadium. You’ll be able to hear the game on KWED.
Also, on the district schedule tonight:
2-2 Boerne Champion hosts 1-3 Victoria East. 0-4 MacArthur is at 3-1 Pieper. And 3-1 New Braunfels travels to 4-0 Smithson Valley. The Matadors will play the Unicorns next week in New Braunfels.
(Smithville) — The Navarro Panthers are on the road at Smithville in District 13-4A.
Navarro is 1-3 in district, while Smithville is 0-3. Kickoff between the Panthers and Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight in Smithville.
(Marion) — The Marion Bulldogs host Ingram Moore in a battle of 2-0 teams in District 13-3A.
Both teams are coming off a district bye last week.
***The game’s kickoff has been moved up an hour to 6 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in Marion to avoid inclement weather forecasted for late tonight.***
