Buck Fever celebrates 40 years of community, conservation, plus camaraderie

Two-day event to be held at Seguin Coliseum

(Seguin) – Now at forty years strong and still growing, Buck Fever will again be celebrating and supporting the great outdoors. Buck Fever returns this week for its 40th annual celebration at the Seguin Coliseum.

Buck Fever President Rodney Bargfrede says what began decades ago as a small gathering of local hunters has evolved into one of Seguin’s most anticipated fall traditions.

“It’s hard to believe that we have been around that long and that some of the founding fathers — they still participate in the show even. I was talking to a few of them the other day and they say it’s hard to believe that something they started that far back would still continue on and be as successful and growing like it is,” said Bargfrede.

The two-day event officially kicks off today with “Kids Night.” Bargfrede says Kids Night is a community favorite that offers free admission for all students 18 and under.

“We are going to have a scavenger hunt throughout the night and also starting at 7 p.m., Gator Country will be coming to put on a show and then we have the pellet gun shoot, archery shoot, petting zoo, fishing tank – a lot of things for the kids to do,” said Bargfrede.

Bargfrede says the fun continues Thursday with the spotlight turning to the Horns Contest, the heart of the Buck Fever tradition. He says here hunters will showcase their prize whitetail deer from the previous season. The contest will recognize top entries in 14 different categories, with first through third place prizes awarded.

He says Thursday night will also be filled with a number of fun activities including the announcement of the 30-gun raffle and bucket drop raffle winners. This year’s event will also welcome a record number of vendors.

Buck Fever will be held today from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. There is no cost for kids six and under. Again, all kids 18 and under are free on Wednesday.
