(Seguin) — The defending state champion Smithson Valley Rangers overpowered the Seguin Matadors on Seguin Athletic Hall of Honor night at Matador Stadium on Friday night.
Smithson Valley, ranked third in Class 5A Division I, took over sole possession of first place in District 13-5A with a 56-10 victory over the Matadors. The Rangers rolled up 424 yards of total offense in the win. Four of Smithson Valley’s touchdowns were from 30 yards or more. Ranger quarterback Ty Knutson threw for three scores and ran for another.
Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey threw for 165 yards, putting him over 2,000 yards on the season. Dailey hit running back Ian Moreno for a two-yard touchdown late in the game for his 18th TD pass of the season. Moreno ran for a tough 68 yards on the ground after being limited to 17 rushing yards last season against Smithson Valley. Matador wide out Elliot Weaver caught 11 passes for the second straight game.
Seguin’s defense was led by Zayon Goldsberry. The senior linebacker had six tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. Defensive lineman Hunter Mica had four tackles, including one for a loss.
Prior to kickoff, former Seguin student-athletes P.J. Hall, Marvin Clack Jr., and Ivy Koehler-Meehan were inducted into the Seguin ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. The trio was recognized on the field before the kickoff.
With the loss, the Matadors fell to 1-3 in District 13-5A, while the Rangers stayed unbeaten at 4-0. Smithson Valley is in first place all alone in the district after New Braunfels suffered their first district loss on Friday to Pieper. The Warriors rallied for a 28-24 win over the Unicorns in New Braunfels. Pieper and New Braunfels are tied for second in the district.
Elsewhere in the district, Wagner beat Victoria East, 51-29, in Victoria to move to 2-2. The Thunderbirds are tied with Boerne Champion for the fourth and final playoff spot in the district. Seguin will play at Wagner next Friday. We will have that game on KWED.
Meanwhile, the news was better on the volleyball court for Seguin.
(San Antonio) — The Lady Matadors swept past San Antonio Highlands on Friday to claim the District 27-5A championship.
Seguin is 14-0 in district. The Lady Mats will close out the regular season with two matches next week. Seguin will compete in the Bi-District round of the playoffs in two weeks.
(Geronimo) — In Geronimo, the Navarro Panther football team got a much-needed win in District 13-4A by beating Gonzales, 31-14, at homecoming on Friday night at Navarro High School.
Navarro running back Dylan Trotti had three touchdowns in the win. The Panthers, 1-3 in district, snapped a six-game losing streak in winning their first district game, keeping their playoff hopes alive with two games left in their season. The Panthers will play at Smithville next week before closing their regular season when they host Lago Vista on October 31st.
