(Timberwood Park) — The Seguin Matadors take to the road tonight to face the defending District 13-5A champion Pieper Warriors.
Both teams are 1-1 on the district season. The Warriors routed Wagner, 48-6, at home in their district opener and then fell 27-17 to defending Class 5A Division I state champion Smithson Valley on the road. Seguin took out Victoria East, 38-21, on the road in their first district game before falling in a 57-50 shootout at home to Boerne Champion.
Last year, Pieper got off to a fast start in a 56-37 win over Seguin at Matador Stadium. Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says his team needs to limit the big play capability of the Warrior offense.
“We just got to eliminate the big play. Make them drive the ball down the field and play assignment football,” Dailey said. “Offensively, (we) have to just execute what we do. All the games where we’ve had success, we were really simple and let the plays come to us. The only time we really struggle is when we force things.”
For the Matadors on offense, receiver Ayden Avila is on pace for a 1,000-yard season. The junior has caught 49 passes for 508 yards and four touchdowns through five games. Senior wideout Elliot Weaver has also caught four TDs. Matador quarterback Corey Dailey has thrown for 1,490 yards with 13 touchdown passes.
Defensively for Seguin, safety Marcus Troy leads the team in tackles with 34. The senior also has a team-high two interceptions on the season.
Seguin and Pieper kick off at 7 p.m. tonight at Pieper High School. You’ll be able to hear the game on KWED.
Last night in the district, Victoria East won their first game of the season with a 43-7 rout at home against winless San Antonio MacArthur.
