(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors welcome the Boerne Champion Chargers to homecoming tonight at Seguin High School in a District 13-5A matchup.
Champion is 2-2 on the season. The Chargers fell 41-14 at home last week in their district opener to defending Class 5A Division I state champion Smithson Valley.
The Matadors are on a three-game winning streak. Seguin beat Victoria East, 38-21, on the road in their district opener last Friday. The Matadors spotted the Titans a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before dominating the last three quarters.
Seguin head coach Craig Dailey felt his team settled down in the second half last week.
“I think in the first half last week, we were trying to make everything a big play, and we were pressing a little bit,” Dailey said. “And we don’t play very well when we press.
“In the second half, our kids executed. If (Victoria East) put people in the box, we threw the screen to Ian (Moreno), Elliot (Weaver) or Ayden (Avila). And then if they took the screen away, we handed the ball off. So, that’s what we’ve been talking about all week — is just taking what they give us.”
Last year’s game between the Chargers and Matadors was a shootout in Boerne with Seguin winning, 73-66. Matador quarterback Corey Dailey had a career night, going 25 of 33 for 471 yards and seven touchdowns in last year’s victory. Through four games this season, Dailey is 88 of 142 for 1,156 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception.
