Seguin Matadors open district play tonight in Victoria

(Victoria) — The Seguin Matadors kick off their District 13-5A schedule tonight on the road at Victoria East.

The Mats are 2-1 heading into district. After an opening loss to Alamo Heights, the Mats came back to win games over Corpus Christi Miller and Brazoswood.

Last week’s 34-27 win over Brazoswood included a key drive late in the first half that produced an important touchdown. The Matadors drove 74 yards in only 18 seconds to reach the end zone. Receivers Ayden Avila and Daniel Pinon caught long passes from quarterback Corey Dailey to set the Mats up at the two-yard line with two seconds left. Dailey would take the ball over the goal line on the half’s final play.

Seguin head coach Craig Dailey talked about the drive.

“Big time plays, they were just executing. Ayden read it perfect (on his play). And then the very next play, Daniel gets press coverage, and he wins on it,” Dailey said. “They called a timeout and the kids were laughing, someone yelled, ‘Field goal!’ and they were like, ‘We ain’t kicking a field goal, we’re going for a touchdown’. That’s our kids’ mentality. We’re gonna be attacking all the time. It’s about scoring touchdowns.”

Tonight’s district opener with Victoria East takes place at Memorial Stadium in Victoria. The Titans are 0-3 on the season but have played a tough non-district schedule against teams whose combined record is 8-1. We’ll have tonight’s game on KWED.

Also on the Friday night docket for area teams,

(Lago Vista) — The Marion Bulldogs are on the road to take on the Lago Vista Vikings. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lago Vista.

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Panthers host La Vernia. That game starts at 7:30 p.m. in Geronimo.

We’ll have High School Football Friday Night starting at 6:15 p.m. on KWED. We’ll check in with Navarro head coach Glenn Hill on the Navarro Panther Report. Then we’ll talk with Marion head coach Joel Call on the Marion Bulldog Report. And we’ll visit with Seguin head coach Craig Dailey on the Seguin Matador Report.

Then it’s off to Victoria, for our Matador football pregame with kickoff between Seguin and Victoria East at 7 O’clock tonight on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
