(Gonzales) — The Marion Bulldogs head east on Friday looking to keep their unbeaten record intact when they take on the Gonzales Apaches.
The Bulldogs won a thriller last Thursday over New Braunfels Long Creek. Marion senior quarterback Kade Pape ran in the winning score with 38 seconds left to complete a 45-42 comeback victory over the Dragons. The touchdown capped an 83-yard drive that covered a little over two minutes.
Marion head coach Joel Call said his Bulldogs were ready for the moment.
“It’s another situation we practice every week in our two-minute drill,” Call said. “There’s times where we do different scenarios, you’re down by this much, you have these many timeouts. So, we try to put them in situations that they’re gonna see in the game.
“Our offense is high-tempo so, we don’t mind playing like that and we thrive in that. It was a scenario they’ve seen. So, they didn’t panic. They kept their composure and they made things happen.”
Marion and Gonzales will kick off at 7:30 Friday night in Gonzales.
(Fischer) — The Navarro Panthers are also on the road on Friday.
Navarro travels to Canyon Lake High School to battle the Hawks. The Panthers fell 66-43 last week at home to Antonian Prep, dropping their record to 1-1.
The Navarro offense did its best to try to keep up with the powerful Antonian offense. Senior running back Dylan Trotti ran for over 200 yards. Senior quarterback Austin Davidson connected with fellow senior Hudson Jenner for a 65-yard touchdown.
Navarro head coach Glenn Hill credited the offensive line for their success last week.
“Offensively, it was pretty impressive. The offensive line is where it all started. They established the line of scrimmage and helped us get the run game going which in turn helps the passing game. We were moving. Antonian has a pretty explosive offense and I was proud of how the guys continued to answer.”
The Panthers will look to get back in the win column on Friday night against Canyon Lake. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Canyon Lake High School.
(El Campo) — The Seguin Matadors will be in El Campo on Friday night for a match-up with the Brazoswood Buccaneers.
The Mats stunned Brazoswood last year in Katy, overcoming a 30-7 halftime deficit to beat the Buccaneers 41-37. Both teams come into Friday’s game with 1-1 records.
We’ll have Seguin’s game on KWED. Our high school football Friday night coverage starts at 6:15 with the Navarro Panther Report. The Panther Report is followed by the Marion Bulldog Report. Then we’ll have the Seguin Matador Report ahead of our Matador pregame show leading up to kickoff between Seguin and Brazoswood at 7 p.m. from Ricebird Stadium in El Campo on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
