(Marion) — The Marion Bulldogs got together with the Poth Pirates at Marion High School on Thursday night.
The Pirates, a consistent playoff team that won 12 games in 2024, provided a tough test for the Bulldogs. Poth scored the only two touchdowns in a simulated quarter during the scrimmage.
One week after the Bulldogs dominated a scrimmage against Hallettsville, first-year Marion head coach Joel Call said last night’s scrimmage with Poth was a lesson in avoiding complacency.
“The tendency is when you have good competition, sometimes the mental breakdowns start to happen. We gotta make sure that we don’t have those issues and address that,” Call said following the scrimmage. “Our theme for this week is ‘stay humble or crumble.’ We played really good last week, and we start patting ourselves on the back and the danger is that you come out and you get complacent. And that’s what we’re trying to eliminate.”
The Bulldogs were able to close the scrimmage with some momentum, ending a Poth possession on a turnover on downs. Marion has one week of practice before the real games begin. The Bulldogs will open their regular season at home against Stockdale next Friday.
Meanwhile,
The Navarro Panthers were on the road last night at Devine for a scrimmage with the Warhorses. Navarro starts the season under new head coach Glenn Hill next Friday at Floresville.
The Seguin Matadors were in the Hill Country last night, scrimmaging the Kerrville Tivy Antlers. Seguin gets their season started at Alamo Heights next Friday. We’ll have that game on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
