(Seguin) — Residents across Seguin and much of South Central Texas are being urged to take immediate precautions today as the region faces a dangerous heat wave. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect until 1 p.m., followed by an Extreme Heat Warning from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The high in Seguin and Guadalupe County is expected reach 103 degrees today. But officials say temperatures are expected to climb even higher, with heat index values pushing 112. The advisory covers a wide area — including Guadalupe and surrounding counties — stretching from the Hill Country to the border region.
Why This Matters:
Extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable — it can be life-threatening. Officials warn that conditions like these can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for those working or spending extended periods outdoors. The risk is also heightened for older adults, children, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” the advisory states. “Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.”
How to Stay Safe:
Drink plenty of water — stay hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Stay indoors — especially during peak heat hours.
Avoid strenuous activity — if you must be outside, take frequent shaded or air-conditioned breaks.
Check on loved ones — especially the elderly and those without access to air conditioning.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also recommends employers take steps to protect outdoor workers, including scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded areas.
What to Watch For:
Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, and nausea. Heat stroke symptoms include a high body temperature, confusion, or loss of consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately — it’s a medical emergency.
The extreme heat is expected to ease later tonight, but today’s conditions serve as a reminder of the importance of heat safety as Texas enters the summer season.
