(Seguin) — Coming off their first district championship season in 19 years and advancing to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, the Seguin Matadors brought home a bevy of All-District 27-5A accolades for the 2025 season.
Seguin junior Corey Dailey added to his trophy mantle by earning the district’s Most Valuable Player award. A multi-sport athlete, Dailey took home the offensive district MVP’s for both the Seguin football and basketball teams earlier this school year.
Sophomore 2nd baseman Ethan Tipple collected the district’s Newcomer of the Year while also earning an all-district first team selection. Making the all-district first team along with Tipple for the Matadors were senior outfielders Ocean Moreno and Kevin Lingueno, junior shortstop Matthew Marek and junior catcher Will Gray Mahaffey. Moreno and Marek were unaminous selections by the district’s coaches.
Seguin all-district second team selections were junior 1st baseman Samuel Edwards, senior utility player Jordan Herrera, junior outfielder Elliot Weaver, senior designated hitter Elijah Hernandez and sophomore pitcher Griffin Welfel. Freshman Jackson Kirchner was named honorable mention utility player. Senior Dylan Eisen earned an honorable mention as a pitcher and utility player. And junior Ian Moreno was named an honorable mention designated hitter. Ian Moreno was the answer to a trivia question. He was the first Seguin baseball player to hit a home run out of the school’s new Matador Legends Ballpark.
The Seguin Matadors won 20 overall games in the 2025 season. After winning the district championship, the Matadors advanced to the second round of the UIL playoffs by defeating South San in the bi-district round. Seguin is led by third year head baseball coach Mike Gonzales, who is a Seguin High School alum.
