(Geronimo) — The Navarro Panthers took out Floresville in the Class 4A area round on Friday and will now face 4th-ranked Sinton in the Region IV semifinals.
Navarro ended the series with the Tigers on Friday with a 4-2 victory in eight innings in Somerset to sweep the area series, 2-0. Caleb Wood had three hits and scored three times in the game for the Panthers. He singled in the top 1st inning and would score on a Matthew Villanueva two-out base hit to score the first run of the game.
Wood scored again with two outs in the 6th. With Navarro trailing 2-1, Wood singled with one out. He would come home later in the inning on a Colt Brown two-out hit to tie the game.
The score stayed 2-2 until the top of the 8th. Emerson Elder singled with one out and Wood would follow with another single. Austin Davidson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brown singled to bring home Elder. Wood then scored on a wild pitch to put the Panthers ahead, 4-2.
With one out in the bottom of the 8th, Elijah Farley relieved Villanueva on the mound with two on and one out. After hitting a batter to load the bases, Farley struck out the next two batters to end the series and earn the save.
The Panthers will take on Sinton in the regional semifinals. The Pirates defeated Zapata in their area round playoff, two games to one.
The series will be a best-of-three. Game one is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. Game two will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. at Nelson Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. Game three, if necessary, will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wolff Stadium. (Seguin) — On Saturday, the Smithson Valley Rangers eliminated the Seguin Matadors from the playoffs with an 8-3 win in game two of their Class 5A area playoff at Matador Legends Ballpark.
The Rangers took advantage of four walks in the 1st inning to score four runs and never trailed in the game. Seguin outhit Smithson Valley 9-5 in the defeat.
The Rangers won the series, 2-0. They will face Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in the regional semifinals.
The District 27-5A champion Matadors completed a successful season winning 20 games under third year head coach Mike Gonzales. Seguin advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Mats also won their first district championship since 2006 and second since 1964.
(Marion) — And the Marion Bulldogs were eliminated from the Class 3A playoffs on Friday.
10th-ranked Hallettsville completed a 2-0 sweep in the area series with a 12-0 victory at Marion High School. The Brahmas advanced to play Falfurrias in the regional semis.
Marion concluded their season with 23 wins under head coach Tim Tesch. Tesch has been the head baseball coach at Marion for nine years. The school’s leader in career wins, Tesch passed 200 career victories this season.
