Big 2nd inning and stellar pitching lead Seguin Matadors to 2nd round of playoffs for first time since 2014

The Seguin Matador baseball team celebrates after defeating South San 5-1 in game three of the Class 5A bi-district playoff in San Antonio on May 3, 2025.

(San Antonio) — Samuel Edwards kept South San bats at bay and the Seguin Matadors used a big 2nd inning to take down the Bobcats 5-1 in game three of their bi-district series on Saturday afternoon at the SAISD Sports Complex.

The Matadors advanced to the area round of the UIL Class 5A playoffs behind strong pitching from the right-hander Edwards, who earned the victory in the last two games of the series after winning game two in relief on Friday night at South San High School. The junior also drove in the game winning runs in the 7th inning in Friday’s 10-7 Seguin victory that forced a game three.

As for Saturday, Edwards started and tossed five innings allowing only one run. Dylan Eisen threw two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th. The senior got a double-play ground ball with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 7th to end the game.

The Mats put four runs on the board in the top of the 2nd to break a 1-1 tie. Griffin Welfel, Elliot Weaver and Jackson Kirchner led off with base hits. Ian Moreno would double to bring home Welfel and Weaver. And then Ethan Tipple would single to plate Kirchner and Moreno.

From there it was a pitcher’s duel as neither team scored after the 2nd inning. After Bobcat starter Angel Alvarez was chased in the 2nd, Alberto Tierranegra would throw five scoreless innings but he would be matched pitch-for-pitch by Seguin’s Edwards.

Saturday’s win sends the Matadors to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Matadors will face either Leander Rouse or Smithson Valley in the area playoffs next week. We will have all of Seguin’s playoff games in the area round on KWED.

In addition to the Matadors, the Navarro Panthers and Marion Bulldogs are in the area round. Navarro swept Manor New Tech to advance to the second round in Class 4A. Marion swept Crystal City in the first round in 3A. Both teams completed their sweeps on Friday.
