Seguin ISD to use metal detectors at SHS graduation

Seguin ISD to use metal detectors at SHS graduation

(Seguin) — Families, friends, and community members attending the 2025 Seguin High School graduation ceremony will be required to pass through a metal detector.

The Seguin ISD is implementing the use of metal detectors for the first time ahead of the 2025 graduation ceremony on Friday, May 23, at Matador Stadium. The district purchased four new detectors and six detection wands; it also received two used metal detectors from Schaeffler Automotive as a donation.

Emily Allen, Seguin ISD director of communications, says they are proud to be able to utilize the equipment at what is one of the largest gatherings on the Seguin High School campus.

“We see this as an opportunity to up the ante on our security measures. We want to keep everyone safe in a celebratory environment and we had the opportunity to buy these metal detectors, and we also received a donation of two metal detectors, so graduation is the perfect opportunity to put them into use, and we are very excited to have them,” said Allen.

It was during last year’s graduation when a man was apprehended after being found with two guns on his person. District officials say a quick-acting employee spotted the man and alerted authorities leading to his arrest with little disruption to the graduation ceremony.

While Allen was not part of the initial discussion for added security, she says that she wouldn’t be surprised “if that was something that was taken into consideration.’

At this point in time, Allen confirms that the use of metal detectors at the Matador Stadium gates is only a precaution and a way to deter any potential criminal activity.

“I have not been made aware of any threat of any kind. This is truly a precautionary measure. We are looking for any opportunity we can to keep our students, our families and our community safe and this is one opportunity that we have, and we are excited to have that equipment,” said Allen.

In planning for graduation, attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as screening could cause delays. Additional security personnel will be present, and guest access will be limited to the home and visitor main entrances. Those planning to attend may enter the stadium at 5 p.m., two hours before the 7 p.m. ceremony.

Clear bags are required at Matador Stadium, and certain items are prohibited, including balloons, confetti, gifts/packages, glitter, large purses, noisemakers, signs, and umbrellas. Flowers for graduates will be allowed.

Seguin ISD officials say they appreciate the community’s support of maintaining a safe environment for our students and families to celebrate.
