(San Antonio) — D’Yanna Priestly came up big at the plate and in the field to lead the Seguin Lady Matadors in a 4-2 game three series clinching win over San Antonio Southwest in the Class 5A bi-district round on Saturday at Southwest High School.
The Lady Mats came up with clutch hits, scoring all of their runs with two outs. Camdyn Mikes got Seguin on the board in the top of the 3rd when she stroked a base hit to left field with the bases loaded to score Camryn Rios and Marissa Torrence putting the Lady Mats in front 2-1.
With the game tied at two in the top of the 4th, Priestly came to the plate with bases loaded and two outs. The senior smashed a line-drive that ricocheted off the glove of Southwest pitcher Sienna Diaz for a hit allowing Amaya Olivares to come home from third and give the Lady Mats a 3-2 lead.
Clinging to that one-run advantage in the bottom of the 6th, Priestly made a crucial play at 3rd base to preserve Seguin’s lead. After Southwest got the first two batters aboard, Lady Dragon pinch-hitter Madison Gonzales hit a hard grounder down the 3rd base line. Guarding the line, Priestly backhanded the ball, stepped on the bag at 3rd and then fired to Jade Hernandez at 1st base to complete a double play. Lady Mat pitcher Kaelynn Ramirez would get the next batter to ground out to Mikes at 2nd base to end the threat.
In the top of the 7th, Priestly led off with a single. She would come around to score from second base with two outs when Jade Hernandez hit a slow roller to Southwest 3rd baseman Paris Alaquinez. Alaquinez’s hurried throw would sail high to first allowing Priestly to score the insurance run.
Ramirez would get the final three outs around a pair of Southwest hits in the bottom of the 7th to send the Lady Mats to the area round. The senior pitched all 19 innings for Seguin in the three-game series. Ramirez tossed six innings in game two earlier in the day, won by the Lady Dragons 5-1. The right-hander threw six innings in Seguin’s 16-6 game one run-rule victory on Friday night in Seguin.
