Suspects apprehended in Monday night shooting

Local girl continues to recover

(Seguin) — A pair of suspects wanted for shooting and injuring a local 8-year-old girl are finally in custody.

After nearly a day of searching, Seguin Police say they were able to locate and take into custody Isaac Montelongo, 20, and Vanessa Herrera, 22 of Seguin.

According to detectives, the child remains in the hospital in stable condition.

Seguin Police say at approximately 9:17 p.m., Monday, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 900 block of Pecan Street.

Reports indicate that the child had been inside her residence when she was struck by a bullet fired from outside the home.

Prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, the female victim was transported by private vehicle to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. She was later transferred by Seguin EMS to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Although Montelongo and Herrera fled the scene, the couple was quickly identified as the suspects in the shooting. Montelongo is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while Herrera faces a charge of assault, family violence.

During its search, Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady expressed how the Seguin PD aggressively pursues all threats to public safety.

He especially noted how threats to the children in the community would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Ultimately, officers delivered on that commitment of ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice with the reported arrests Tuesday afternoon.

Although Seguin Police say the shooting was an isolated incident, safety measures were taken at the Seguin Little League Complex at the time of the shooting. They say due to the close proximity of the multiple rounds of loud gunfire, children and spectators were immediately evacuated from the area as a safety precaution. All regular baseball and softball games were held and continued the following night.
