Efforts to advocate for foster kids do not go unnoticed by Guadalupe County

(Guadalupe County) — Guadalupe County is being thanked for being a part of the village that is helping to protect local kids.

Nicole Douglass, of CASA of Central Texas, recently thanked county leaders for their support of the local organization that “provides high-quality and best interest advocacy for children and youth in the child welfare system.” That support was shown through the signing of a proclamation observing the month of April as Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month in Guadalupe County.

As a CASA or Court Appointed Special Advocate, community volunteers are trained to ensure that children’s needs are met and that their voices “are lifted.” Representing them in and outside of the courtroom, CASA’s only focus is on what is best for the child who is in foster care.

Douglas says Guadalupe County’s acknowledgement and observance of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month only amplifies its position on keeping kids safe.

“We can’t do this without the support of guys and women like you on the commissioner’s court. We appreciate so much every year that you allow us to come to commissioner’s court. This is an amazing opportunity for us to spread awareness about child abuse, prevention and awareness. Just a bit of statistics for us, last year, we were able to serve 392 children in our four-county footprint and we can only do that by having enough volunteers to train and advocate for them and we just want to again thank you and it’s you that makes everything a chance and a difference in a child’s life,” said Douglass.

This year marks the 40th anniversary for the CASA program.
