(Abilene) — Seguin’s James Medrano won the state title at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships in Abilene on Saturday.
Competing in the Division 1 123 pound weight class, the senior Medrano lifted a total of 1395 pounds in the squat, bench press and dead lift to earn the gold at the state competition. Medrano also won the gold at the regional championship earlier this month.
In other results for Seguin athletes at the state meet:
Jasiah Herrera placed 17th in the 148 pound weight class. Julius Rivera was 35th in the 198 pound division. Hunter Mica finished 19th in the 242 pound class. Gabriel Soliz also competed in the 123 pound division as the Matadors finished in 5th place as a team at the state championships.
On Friday, the Navarro Panthers competed at the Division 2 meet. Ashton Evans earned a silver medal in the 132 pound weight class. Trinidad Aguirre finished 10th in the same weight class. Evan Rodriguez was 22nd in the 148 pound class for Navarro. And Caleb Shiroky placed 9th in the 181 pound division.
