(Seguin) – Folks are hoping that recent winds in the area will stick around for at least one more day. That’s because kites will be in the sky this Saturday for the 4th Annual Community Kite Festival. The partnership between the Seguin ISD and the city of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department. Organizers are inviting families to the open fields of Manuel C. Castilla Park for a day of fun.
Allison Seidenberger, Seguin ISD ACE director, says folks can either bring a kite from home or some will be provided on-site.
“We have several ways that families can enjoy the kite flying portion of the event. One of them is the observation of the Coastal Bend Flying Circus and the Surfside Flyers Club Showcase and so they will be out in the field with some of the larger more ornate kind of kits and doing some demonstrations. We also have been graciously donated by the city of Seguin and Walmart of Seguin free kites that we will help families assemble and be able to use and take and participate in the event with those and then lastly, we have a station that actually is the city of Seguin station – the one that the parks and rec run – and that is where they actually do kite making. There’s an opportunity to build and make your own kite from the materials that they will have there for you. So, there’s lots of ways that you can get involved with the kite flying,” said Seidenberger.
Although the featured event is kite flying, Seidenberger says a host of other fun events and activities will be available.
“We have over 35 booths that are available for receiving information, activities and they are community-based resources for families to be able to utilize to help support in various ways. I know one exciting thing that is new and different this year is Leadership Seguin will be there, and they will be raffling off a Zero Turn lawnmower and those proceeds are going to be going toward a new 40×60 picnic pavilion at the park that we actually hold this event at– the Manuel C. Castilla Park. That’s their initiative for the year and so we are excited to have this opportunity for them. I think they are going to actually have it there on display,” said Seidenberger.
The ACE program will also be hosting various yard games for families. The event will include DJ music and a performance by the Vogel Elementary School Choir at 10:30 a.m.
Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will also be served while supplies last. ACE and the Seguin HEB are making the food possible.
Door prizes will also be raffled off for those in attendance.
The free Community Kite Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Manuel C. Castilla Park is located at 2402 N. Guadalupe St.
