SEGUIN, Texas — Texas Lutheran University and Director of Athletics Bill Miller announced today that they will unveil a plaque honoring former TLU student-athlete, the late Zachary Herman ’22, at TLU’s new throws facility on the north side of campus on Friday, March 21 at 2 PM, prior to the Bulldogs’ D3 Challenge home track meet.

“Zach Herman symbolized what we want to see in all of our student-athletes.  He was courageous, loyal, committed, passionate, and very competitive. He was a big man who also, over time, developed a ‘bigger than life’ persona. He left a high standard and a legacy that will have a positive impact on future TLU track and field student-athletes. He left a lasting impression on the TLU Athletics Department, and especially our track and field program. He will never be forgotten. He was a champion and a difference maker. This day is a fitting tribute to everything that he accomplished in his short but impactful life.”

During his career at TLU, Herman earned All-Region honors his junior and senior year, setting the program record in the hammer throw and representing the Bulldogs in the event at the 2022 NCAA Track & Field National Championships in Ohio in May 2022. Herman’s hammer throw record of 174’6″ stands to this day. On July 20, 2022, Herman was diagnosed with A.L.L Leukemia, a rapid developing blood cancer, fighting the disease until his untimely passing in April 2023. Herman was TLU’s recipient of 2023’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s “Change for the Better” Campaign, where each SCAC institution’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is challenged  to solicit donations and raise money for a cause of the school’s choice. TLU set the bar high, rallying to raise $3,493.20, a record amount since the inception of the campaign in 2015, in support of the Zachary Herman Fund.

The event is open to the public with parking available on campus on Fritz St. Attendees will have to walk around the construction of the Verne Lundquist Student Athletic Center to reach the Bulldogs new facility located behind the centerfield fence at baseball’s Katt-Isbel Field.
