(Marion) — The Marion Bulldogs saw their 45-game district win streak come to an end with a 10-8 loss in nine innings to Jourdanton on Friday night at Marion High School.
The Bulldogs battled back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the fifth. Jourdanton would take leads in the 6th and 8th innings and Marion would again respond each time by evening the score, but the Bulldogs were unable to extend the game in the bottom of the ninth after the Indians scored two runs in the top of the frame following a 30-minute delay due to the lights going out at the ballpark.
Marion is 0-1 in District 27-3A after suffering their first district loss since the 2019 season. Bulldog head coach Tim Tesch, who is one win away from 200 in his career at Marion High School, says the end of the streak was somewhat of a relief for his team.
“We’re just blessed with a lot of great baseball players and (the streak) is unbelievable when you think about it. I’m glad the monkey’s off our back so we don’t have to mess with it anymore. So, we’ll start a new streak and try to get back on the horse.”
Mateo Zuniga, Jack Wells, Kade Pape and Huck Schoenvogel each had two hits in the game for Marion. The Bulldogs will host the No. 9 team in Class 5A when they host the New Braunfels Unicorns today. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at Marion High School.
(New Braunfels) — On the softball diamond, the Marion Lady Bulldogs crushed New Braunfels Long Creek 12-1 in non-district play on Friday.
Maggie Luna led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with four RBI on two hits in the victory. Marion is off for the Spring Break this week.
