(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors held off San Antonio Edison 10-8 on Wednesday morning in their district home opener at Matador Legends Ballpark.
The Matadors scored all 10 of their runs in the first two innings. Matthew Marek doubled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Corey Dailey laced a two-RBI triple to the gap in right on a two-strike count in the first. And Ethan Tipple drove in three runs with base hits in each inning.
The Golden Bears would respond and claw their way back into the game with seven runs over the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth, Seguin coach Mike Gonzales brought Dailey on to pitch to get the final out and end an Edison threat. Dailey would come through with the strikeout and would finish the game, pitching two and a third scoreless innings.
“Mr. Do-It-All! He’ll go score 30 on Tuesday, come shut the door on Wednesday and go throw some touchdowns on Friday,” Gonzales said about the multi-sport star Dailey. “It’s good to have that. We have guys that are gonna come in and throw strikes.
“Some of our guys didn’t do a very good job of that today, but that’s alright. The way we are, the way we compete, we know they’re gonna come back to work. And they’re gonna do what they gotta do to make sure the next time they’re on the bump they’re gonna fill it up more.”
The Mats, 2-0 in District 27-5A, have off until next Tuesday when they travel to San Antonio Burbank.
(Seguin) — Over at the softball field at Legends Ballpark, the Seguin Lady Matadors earned their fourth run-rule district victory in four games, drubbing the Edison Lady Bears 17-1 in three innings.
The Lady Mats batted around three times and scored all 17 of their runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Texas Lutheran commit Camryn Rios and junior Brylee Weiding each had home runs. Rios launched a two-run jack while Weiding cleared the wall with a three-run blast later in the inning. Weiding finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI.
“She did an amazing job,” Said Seguin coach John Garcia about Weiding. “That’s just what we need from the leadoff (hitter).
“We’re going into Spring Break and take some time off, relax, recharge our batteries and we’re coming back on Monday and getting after it again.”
The Lady Mats also have off until Tuesday when they play Burbank. That game will take place Tuesday night at the SA ISD Sports Complex.
