Carjacking on west end of the county lands man behind bars

(Schertz) — A Schertz man is in the Guadalupe County Jail after stealing a vehicle at gunpoint and later firing at multiple vehicles.

Schertz Police officials say the incident first began on Tuesday at 11:35 p.m. at the HEB located at 17460 Interstate 35 North. They say soon after the suspect, Derrick Escobar, 45, stole the vehicle, officers received another call about gunfire in the 2900 block of Candleberry Dr. Upon arrival, officers could hear additional shots being fired. It was at that time that they were assisted by the Cibolo PD who used a UAS (drone) and located the suspect in the 1600 block of Yucca Park.

Escobar is said to have been actively shooting at multiple vehicles and residences. He was also seen shooting at the drone. Officers say they initiated contact with Escobar who was given commands and surrendered to the officers without further incident.Escobar was in possession of two handguns and was wearing body armor at the time of the incident. Schertz PD officials say it appears as though Escobar was experiencing a mental health crisis.

Escobar was arrested and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail without incident. He is charged with Aggravated Robbery; Impersonating a Public Servant; Deadly Conduct and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.
