Seguin ISD adopts first official evaluation of school superintendent

Seguin ISD adopts first official evaluation of school superintendent

(Seguin)—The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees has concluded its evaluation of Superintendent Veronica Vijil without providing many details about the results.

The school board, in a late-night vote on Tuesday, unanimously adopted the evaluation results for Dr. Vijil.

Despite having the opportunity to extend her contract and even grant her a pay raise, trustees on Tuesday night opted to only adopt the results of the evaluation of her job performance.

Board President Denise Crettenden says while the board can always come back for another evaluation, Tuesday night’s process allowed them to thoroughly comb through Vijil’s performance — addressing both strengths and weaknesses.

Although those outcomes were not publicly shared, Crettenden believes the board was confident with the process.

“We did take our time like really working on an instrument because I think with this being an evaluation not happening in the summer, we needed to look at some different aspects. We don’t have the full STAAR data — some of the things that you would have at the end of the year – end of the year surveys and things like that and so we wanted to go off the guiding documents that’s been in place for the last few years and that was our Strategic Plan and based it on those items,” said Crettenden.

Trustees spent nearly five hours going through the process behind closed doors. The final hour and a half were spent going over the evaluation results with Dr. Vijil. Dr. Vijil says she too was confident in the instrument chosen to determine her future steps with the district.

“They called me in and reviewed both the scores as well as comments. I feel like it’s a thorough tool that covers a lot of topics, a lot of areas and it gives each board member the opportunity to provide feedback and so, just sets some expectations with their comments and it provides me information and direction,” said Dr. Vijil.

Since no contract extension was approved, Dr. Vijil continues with two years left on an existing three-year contract. This contract was approved when she took over the role of superintendent in February of 2024.

Due to the fact that no action was taken on her contract, Dr. Vijil’s base salary remains at $231,000 per year.

Dr. Vijil previously served as superintendent of schools in the Fabens ISD near El Paso. She was initially named Seguin ISD’s deputy superintendent while the district was under the leadership of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez.

Shortly after she arrived, Dr. Vijil was named the interim superintendent when Dr. Gutierrez resigned to take another position in the Austin area. The board later removed the interim tag and then formally hired Dr. Vijil as superintendent a year ago. She’s currently been the district’s top administrator for just shy of a year and a half.
