Free service to assist local community
(Seguin) — Tax season is upon us—and that means Texas Lutheran University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic is once again open for business. That’s according to Tracy Donley, TLU director of communications and content. Donley says the return of the free Tax Clinic is a gift from TLU students.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our accounting students to learn how to do taxes. But at the same time, it’s a great service to offer the community so really, it’s a win-win situation. Our students get the great learning experience and at the same time, they are offering a wonderful service free of charge to the community,” said Donley.
The clinic will be open to the public every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, from January 29 through April 12 with the exceptions of the days that fall during Spring Break (March 8, 12, and 15).
Donley says the free service is designed so that those who most need it, get it.
“Anyone whose total household income doesn’t exceed $67,000 is eligible to stop by. Taxpayers who are filing jointly should come together because your spouse needs to come with you so they can both sign the return,” said Donley.
To make things even easier, Donley says the tax clinic is strictly drive-thru.
“You drive in on Court Street. You turn onto Beck Street (parking lot) and then you just line up in your car and then the students will come and greet the people in their cars. People never get out of their car,” said Donley.
There is no charge to get your taxes done, but again, to qualify for the clinic, the total household income cannot exceed $67,000. Taxpayers should also bring a photo ID, Social Security card, and all tax forms. If they have dependents they wish to claim, they must also bring the Social Security cards of those individuals.
Beck Street is located south of the TLU Campus just off West Court Street.
