(Seguin) — A Seguin High School student was detained after bringing a weapon on campus this week.
On Thursday, January 30, Seguin ISD staff contacted the Seguin Police Department after being made aware of a photo on social media. The photo appeared to show a juvenile holding a handgun on school grounds.
Following an investigation, a student was identified as the individual in the photo.
Sharing in a joint written statement to the community was the Seguin Police Department and Seguin ISD.
Seguin PD officials stated, “The safety of students and staff is our top priority, and Seguin ISD staff took immediate action to maintain a safe environment once the district was aware of the image. We are thankful for the collaborative effort from our campus staff in reporting this incident.”
Since the incident, the district has increased the presence of law enforcement on campus and will continue to do so over the next few days.
The statement also indicated that the district would provide “extra support for SHS students and staff” and that they “are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all.”
Officials went on to say that each campus has an armed officer on site to ensure student safety.
The district reminds the community that students found in possession of weapons on any Seguin ISD campus will face disciplinary action according to the district’s code of conduct, as well as criminal charges from law enforcement.
Seguin ISD is asking that parents monitor their student’s social media activity and remind them that if they see something, they should say something. Students and parents can use P3, a system utilized by the district to make anonymous reports. Reports can also be made by logging on to the district’s website.
