Seguin Matadors hand Highlands first district loss with impressive win

The Seguin and San Antonio Highlands JV basketball teams compete prior to the varsity game at Goldie Harris Gym on January 3, 2025.

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors took down the top team in District 27-5A in convincing fashion on Friday afternoon at Goldie Harris Gym.

The Mats steamrolled the San Antonio Highlands Owls, 60-38. Seguin never trailed in the game in sending Highlands to their first district defeat in seven games.

Junior Corey Dailey had the hot hand early for the Mats burying three three-pointers in the first quarter to finish the stanza with 13 points as the Matadors built an 18-15 lead after the first eight minutes. Seguin would push their lead to six at halftime, 29-23 led by Dailey’s 17.

After a slow start in the third quarter, the Matadors would build on their lead. With just a 32-31 lead near the mid-point of the third, the Matadors took control thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Cameron Juarez-Bruns that extended the Seguin lead to seven. The senior Juarez-Bruns would drop in 12 of his 14 points in the game in the second half helping Seguin put away the Owls with a 28-7 run over the game’s final 12 minutes.

Matador head coach Guy Nowlin lauded the effort of Juarez-Bruns following the victory.

“Right there at the end of the game I told him, ‘that was the best game you played all year’. He’s had kind of a bit rocky go at it, but today he stepped up. He played well on the defensive end also.”

Dailey led all scorers with 26 points. Tavien Miles and Colton Saengerhausen each had six points while Jordan Miller poured in five for the Mats. Seguin improved to 4-2 in district play with Friday’s impressive win. The Matadors will next host San Antonio Burbank on Tuesday night.

(San Antonio) — On the girls side in San Antonio, Highlands snapped Seguin’s four-game district winning streak as the Lady Owls dropped the Lady Matadors, 43-28.

Sophomore Rebeka Wilke paced the Lady Mats with 11 points. Seguin finished the first half of the district season with an even 4-4 record. The Lady Matadors will play at San Antonio Burbank on Tuesday night.
