High school basketball: Navarro boys take Nixon-Smiley tournament while Marion boys win Johnson City tourney

(Weimar) — The Seguin Lady Matadors finished as the runners-up at the Weimar girls basketball tournament on Friday.

The Lady Mats took down host Weimar, 58-47 to reach the championship game before falling 50-35 to La Grange in the final. Sophomore. Freshmen Jazlyn Gil and Faith Franklin along with sophomore Britlyn Walls averaged double figures in the two games. The victory by La Grange snapped a six-game win streak for the Lady Matadors.

The Seguin girls return to District 27-5A play tomorrow afternoon when they host San Antonio Edison.

(Victoria) — The Seguin boys completed the Victoria ISD Mike Smith Classic Tournament on Saturday with a close 53-50 defeat at the hands of Victoria West.

Matador junior Cory Dailey averaged nearly 21 points in four games over two days in the tournament. Dailey scored 28 in Seguin’s 55-47 win over Edna in their opener on Friday.

The Matadors will be at Edison on Tuesday for a New Year’s Eve matinee with the Bears.

(Nixon) — The Navarro Panthers won the Nixon-Smiley tournament on Saturday.

The Panthers beat Jourdanton 37-30 and then knocked off host Nixon-Smiley 52-43 in the championship. Navarro closes out 2024 on a five-game win streak. The Panthers will next play at Cuero the day after New Year’s Day on Thursday.

(Lockhart) — The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers will play their final game of 2024 today. Navarro is at Lockhart. The game will tip at 11:30 a.m. this morning at Lockhart High School.

(Johnson City) — The Marion boys took the Johnson City tournament on Saturday to close out their 2024 schedule.

The Bulldogs edged Comfort, 42-41 and then crushed Kenedy, 88-47 on Friday. Marion routed host Johnson City in the championship, 78-38 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs will next host Blanco on Friday at Marion High School.

(Smithville) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs fell to host Smithville at the Lady Tiger basketball tournament on Friday.

Marion will host Young Women’s Leadership Academy for their District 27-3A opener on Friday.

(Universal City) — And the Lifegate Christian basketball teams will return to action today at First Baptist Academy in Universal City. The girls/boys doubleheader starts at 5:30 p.m. with the girls at First Baptist Academy.
