Food drive set for this weekend, registration deadline this Thursday

Food drive set for this weekend, registration deadline this Thursday

(Seguin) — Families needing some assistance with food are reminded to sign up as soon as possible for the final food distribution of the year.

Guadalupe County this Saturday will be teaming up with the Seguin ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank for its holiday distribution event in the Seguin ISD Administrative Building parking lot located next door to Arlan’s Grocery.

Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator, says they purposely planned for this date just before the holiday.

“The San Antonio Food Bank and the Seguin ISD and the county partnered for another food distribution at the Seguin Administration Office this year. We planned on this site and this location in Seguin right before Christmas. I know going into Christmas break for a lot of people, food is a struggle and so we planned it for this weekend. So, people that are seeking some assistance with food can go online and register to sign up to get some food,” said Pinder.

Pinder says registration is free and simple. He says the purpose is to ensure enough food for those who need it.

“You sign up online and it asks you a few questions through the food bank and it’s more than a survey. But it doesn’t matter what your status is employed, unemployed, the food is being passed out to those who need the food service. I don’t know what the food will be this weekend. I don’t know until later this week but typically, we try to get some fresh produce. We try to get some sort of bread, some sort of milk product – and just try to get those kinds of things. But the things that are distributed out in these types of food distributions are things that folks are going to enjoy, and you can make a good descent meal out of it. That’s one of the things that is most important. You are not going to get products that you aren’t going to get a good meal for the family and the stuff that you are going to get is going to feed a good family – a family of five, six people – for a couple of days,” said Pinder.

Pinder says food distributions are held every day and encourages families to check with the San Antonio Food Bank when they need assistance.

“If you go to the San Antonio Food Bank’s website, you can find food distributions throughout the area not only in Guadalupe County but also in San Antonio. Everyday they have a food distribution somewhere so ours just happens to be that day. There will be others going on. If you are from Guadalupe County, Comal County or any surrounding area, anybody can come in and receive food,” said Pinder.

The food distribution event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Seguin ISD Central Office located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

QR codes and links to register or volunteer can be found on various Facebook pages including KWED Radio, the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Office, the Seguin ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank.
