SEGUIN, Texas — Texas Lutheran punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) has been named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for his performance in the team’s win against Southwestern on Saturday, the conference announced on Monday. The honor is Welch’s second SCAC weekly honor this season.
Welch averaged 46.0 yards on four punts as Texas Lutheran completed their undefeated home season with a 17-10 win over Southwestern.
The New Braunfels native placed two punts inside the Pirates 20-yard line that both resulted in Pirates drives starting at their one-yard line. Welch finished the game with a long of 51 yards.
Welch all but etched his name in the TLU record book on Saturday, increasing his season average to 44.5 yards, passing the previous program record of 43.0 yards held by Harold Anderson since 1962. Welch currently ranks second in NCAA Division-III in punting. Texas Lutheran, as a team, leads NCAA Division-III with a 42.26 net punting average.
It marks the ninth SCAC weekly award for the Bulldogs this season and fourth for a specialist.
Welch and the Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 against Linfield University in the second round of the NCAA Division-III Championship Football Tournament. Kickoff is set for 2 PM CT / 12 PM PT from Maxwell Field and Memorial Stadium and will air nationally on ESPN+.
