Seguin's fifth attempt to comeback from half time deficit this season falls short in bi-district round

(San Antonio) — Four times this season, the Seguin Matadors won games after trailing at half time but they couldn’t do it a fifth time in a 33-26 loss to San Antonio Southwest in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District round on Friday night at Dragon Stadium in San Antonio.

The Matadors found themselves down 14-7 at the half and then later down 26-10 in the third quarter to the Dragons. Seguin would pull within ten with 50 seconds left in the third when quarterback Corey Dailey hit tight end Lane Seidenberger for a seven-yard touchdown. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Dailey scrambled around a Southwest pass rush and found Seidenberger again in the end zone to make the score 26-18.

A little over three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Dailey scored on a one-yard run on fourth down to make the score 26-24. The junior quarterback would again buy time with his feet on the following two point conversion to find Nik Henry coming back to his quarterback from the back of the end zone to haul in the conversion just across the goal line to tie the game at 26.

The Dragons would then go on a 74-yard drive to take the lead again. Southwest running back Tyson Deen scored his third touchdown of the night with a 23-yard TD run down the right sideline to put the Dragons up, 33-26 with 2:53 left in the ball game.

The Matadors would get the ball back and drive into Southwest territory with under a minute to go. On a fourth and long, Nik Henry could not haul in a bullet pass fired over the middle by Dailey inside the Dragon 20-yard line with 15 seconds on the clock. Southwest would kneel out the game following the turnover on downs.

Seguin erased halftime deficits against Brazoswood, Victoria East, Boerne Champion and Wagner during the 2024 regular season. They would erase another half time deficit against Southwest, but could not complete the comeback this time ending their season in the first round of the playoffs.

Dailey finished the game 18 of 27 through the air for 142 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 54 yards and a score. Running back Ian Moreno led Seguin with 153 yards rushing on 27 carries. The senior Henry had eight catches for 63 yards in his final game as a Matador. Seidenberger, also a senior, had three catches for 15 yards.

Junior linebacker Damian Garcia led the Mat defense with four tackles. Junior defensive lineman Hunter Mica had two tackles including one for loss.

Southwest, 11-0 on the season, moves on to the Area round next week where they will take on Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. Seguin finished 4-3 in District 13-5A this season and 5-6 overall.

(Jourdanton) — The Navarro Panthers moved onto the Class 4A Division II Area round on Friday night. Navarro crushed Carrizo Springs, 56-14 in their bi-district playoff in Jourdanton. The Panthers will play Cuero in round two next Friday night in Floresville.

(Seguin) — And the Marion Bulldogs, who defeated Jourdanton on Thursday night in the Class 3A Division I playoffs, will play Goliad in the next round. Marion and Goliad will meet at Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium next Friday night.
