Seguin, Navarro and Marion look to strengthen playoff positions in week 10 of high school football season

(Lago Vista) — The Navarro Panthers will play their final regular season game of 2024 at Lago Vista on Friday night.

The Panthers have won three straight to move into third place in District 13-4A. Navarro is just a half-game back of the second place Lago Vista Vikings heading into Friday night’s matchup.

Last week at homecoming at Navarro High School, the Panthers ran by the Smithville Tigers 45-15. The Navarro Slot-T put up over 500 yards of total offense in the rout.

Navarro head football coach Rod Blount says his team has improved a lot through the course of the season.

“It was great to see those explosive plays. The guys have been doing a great job of driving the field and putting good drives together,” Blount said. “Really, the offensive line has come together. They’re starting to pick up the different looks they’re seeing. Backs are doing a great job. Everybody’s getting in sync now.

“Defense is getting better each and every week coming up with big plays, big stops and turnovers. We’re just gonna continue to work, get better every single day and see how far we can run.”

The Panthers will finally have their bye in the final week of the season next week. This week’s game between Navarro and Lago Vista kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Lago Vista High School.

(Llano) — The Marion Bulldogs, still alive for a District 13-3A title, return to the Hill Country on Friday to play first place Llano.

Last week, the Bulldogs fell for the first time in district 28-21 at Ingram Moore. Marion senior running back Christian Sanchez went over 100 yards on the ground against the Warriors. And freshman receiver Eli Parker had a break-out game with 131 yards receiving including a 69-yard TD reception.

“Eli’s come a long way. We knew he was gonna be a player in eight grade,” Marion head coach Ryne Miller said of his freshman. “He played with us in 7-on-7 over the summer. He showed some real good flashes. As a freshman on varsity, it’s always fun to see. He’s got a bright future. We’re excited to watch him grow as a player and give some production to our offense.”

Parker and the Bulldogs are tied for second in district with Ingram Moore at 2-1. Llano leads the district with a 3-0 record. Friday night’s game between Llano and Marion kicks off at 7 p.m. at Llano High School.

(Seguin) — And the Seguin Matadors and New Braunfels Unicorns will get together for the 112th time on Friday night for the Guadalupe River Bowl at Matador Stadium.

The series, which dates back to 1922, is tied for the fifth most games played between rival schools in the state of Texas. The Unicorns have won the last 10 games in the series.

Both teams come into this year’s matchup tied for third place in District 13-5A at 3-2. Friday night’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. and we’ll have the game on KWED.

Our High School Football Friday Night coverage on KWED starts with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 p.m. Friday evening followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.
