(Seguin) — On a night where they honored their seniors, the Seguin Lady Matadors remembered fallen teammate Chloe Belicek and won a district championship in front of an emotional crowd at Seguin High School on Tuesday night.
A near capacity home crowd and the Belicek family watched as the Lady Matadors took down San Antonio Brackenridge in straight sets to earn a share of the District 27-5A title. Seguin won the match 25-9, 25-7, 25-20.
Members of the Belicek family were recognized before the Senior Night match. Chloe Belicek’s life was tragically cut short just before her senior year at Seguin High School when she passed away on July 25th following injuries sustained in a car crash the day before in San Marcos. Belicek was 17 years old.
Seguin head coach Ashley Farris says Belicek’s spirit is still with the Lady Matador volleyball team.
“We’re all kinda still expecting Chloe to walk through the door any minute,” Farris said after Tuesday’s match. “We talk about it often, none of us feel (her passing) is real just yet. We talk about her so much and carry her spirit with us everywhere.
“She’s here. She’s here with us. And we really all believe that. And we’re so thankful to know her, so thankful she’s one of us.”
Tuesday night was the final time for Lady Matador seniors Karina Lerma and Ayla Arcos to play at Goldie Harris in the regular season. Seguin’s season is not over. The district champion Lady Mats will play in the Class 5A UIL playoffs next week.
Seguin will take on San Antonio John Jay. The bi-district match will take place next Tuesday at Veterans Memorial High School in San Antonio. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
(Geronimo) — The Navarro Lady Panthers also took home a victory on Senior Night at Navarro High School on Tuesday.
Navarro swept past Bandera 25-16, 25-15, 25-14. The Lady Panthers finished third in District 26-4A.
Navarro will face Lago Vista next Monday in the bi-district round. The match will take place at Kyle Lehman High School with first serve at 6:30 p.m.
(Universal City) — And the Marion Lady Bulldogs fell on the road at Randolph in their final District 27-3A match of the season on Tuesday night.
The district champion Randolph Lady Ro-Hawks won the match 25-13, 25-17, 25-21. Marion finished tied for second in district with San Antonio Cole.
The Lady Bulldogs will take on Crystal City in the bi-district round. The match will be held at Devine High School next Tuesday. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
