SEGUIN, Texas — Texas Lutheran celebrated homecoming with a 28-6 win against McMurry in front of a crowd of over 1,500 fans – including members of the 1974 NAIA national championship team and TLU Hall of Famer Verne Lundquist Saturday evening.
With the win, the Bulldogs move into a tie for first place after winning the rematch with War Hawks after dropping their matchup earlier this season.
The Texas Lutheran defense limited a McMurry offense that had scored 20+ points in five out of six games entering Saturday to a season low six points. Tyler Ward (Woodway/Bishop Louis Reicher) finished with a team-high seven tackles, while Grayson Kowalski (Sabinal/Sabinal) tallied six tackles and a sack. Sean Blanks (Angleton/Angleton) and Deyreck Dean (Rockwall/Rockwall) finished with five tackles each. Troy Tomaselli (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian) finished with four tackles and an 87-yard pick six, the first of his career. With the interception, Tomaselli moves into the top ten in TLU’s D3 history in interceptions with five so far through seven games into his sophomore season.
Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central), who was Dave Campbell’s Non-FBS Player of the Week and SCAC Player of the Week last week, amassed 219 yards passing and led the Bulldogs ground attack with 53 yards on 15 carries, while Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) finished with 48 yards. New Braunfels native Ryker Purdy (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) scored the first two touchdowns of his career as rushed for 18 yards on four carries and the two touchdowns on Saturday. Caleb Camarillo (San Antonio/Southside) led Texas Lutheran with 77 yards receiving including a 69-yard touchdown.
In a matchup between two offenses with explosive capabilities, the first quarter was a defensive battle in the first quarter as the War Hawks carried a 3-0 lead through the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs got on the board late in the second quarter as Bosanko found Camarillo across the middle for a 69-yard touchdown connection as the Bulldogs took a 7-3 lead. Texas Lutheran would run a two-minute drill to perfection as a 33-yard pass to Eugene Robinson IV (Lake Charles, LA/Fort Bend Hightower (TX)) set up a four-yard rushing touchdown for Purdy.
A Purdy rushing touchdown would cap the Bulldogs opening drive of the third quarter as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 21-3. Troy Tomaselli would take his fourth interception of the season 87-yards for the final Bulldogs points of the day late in the third quarter as the Bulldogs remain undefeated at home.
Up next, the first place Bulldogs host Lyon College at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 PM. Saturday will act as Military Appreciation Day at Bulldog Stadium as all fans with a military ID will get in free. The game will be broadcast on TLU’s YouTube Channel, TLU+, along with KWED 1580 AM.
