Week nine of high school football season kicks off Friday for Seguin, Marion and Navarro

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Panthers host District 13-4A adversary, the Smithville Tigers at homecoming at Navarro High School on Friday night.

The Tigers are still in search of their first district win while the Panthers come in at 2-2. Navarro dropped their first two district games to Wimberley and Salado, but rebounded to win their next two over Jarrell and Gonzales.

A big homecoming crowd is expected at Erwin-Lee Field on Friday. Navarro head football coach Rod Blount calls Erwin-Lee and Geronimo a special place.

“It’s a great community. It’s been great to my family,” Blount said. “They sure show up on Friday night and support their team. It’s great every time we get out on Erwin-Lee. It’s got a little more special meaning than most places because of the history. So, it’s exciting and homecoming’s a big thing here and we’re excited to get out and put on a show for the fans.”

Navarro’s homecoming kickoff with Smithville is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening in Geronimo.

(Ingram) — The Marion Bulldogs, coming off a District 13-3A bye last week, return to district play on Friday at Ingram Moore.

The Bulldogs, 2-0 in district, snapped a four-game losing streak to Randolph with a thrilling 35-28 win over the Ro-Hawks in Marion two weeks ago. The Bulldogs went up in the final minutes with a Kade Pape touchdown pass and survived a wild finish on the game’s last play.

“Jaiden Riley ran a little comeback route in the end zone and Kade got him on a little sprint out,” Marion head coach Ryne Miller said, describing Marion’s final touchdown. “And the defense stepped up, (Randolph) had a lateral on the last play of the game and we knocked him out at about the two-yard line to win the game.

“That was a big win for our guys, but I told our guys it’s not our Super Bowl. It’s exciting, it’s a big win over a really good football team and that’s not the end goal here. So going into the bye week, we got our guys healthy and rested up. Now we got to keep the momentum going into Ingram this week.”

Friday night’s game between Ingram Moore and Marion kicks off at 7 p.m. at Moore High School in Ingram.

(Seguin) — And the Seguin Matadors are back home on Friday to face District 13-5A rival Wagner.

Both teams are 2-2 in district, tied for fourth place. Each team has lost to Pieper and Smithson Valley. Friday night’s game between Wagner and Seguin kicks off at 7 p.m. at Matador Stadium.

We’ll have High School Football Friday Night tomorrow on KWED. We’ll start our coverage with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.
