(Spring Branch) — The District 13-5A gauntlet for the Seguin Matadors continues tonight with a road matchup with the Smithson Valley Rangers.

The Mats are 2-1 in district. The Rangers, coming off an appearance in the state title game in 2023, are also 2-1. Each team has lost to unbeaten Pieper.

Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey has been red hot over the last two games. The junior threw for over 900 yards with 13 touchdowns in games against Boerne Champion and Pieper. Matador head football coach Craig Dailey says Smithson Valley will try to pressure his quarterback with a strong front four.

“They want to create pressure with their four down front, their best players on defense,” Dailey said. “They try to do a lot of twists up front. And in the secondary they keep everything in front of them, a bend but don’t break secondary. So, we’re really gonna have to hand handle their four down.”

Tonight’s game kicks off at 7 O’clock at Ranger Stadium on the Smithson Valley High School campus. We’ll have the game for you on KWED.

Earlier this week, a pair of Seguin senior football players were selected to play in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game. Wide receiver Nik Henry and offensive lineman David Barron will play in the game scheduled to take place in January. Dailey, who’s witnessed Matadors participate in SA Sports all-star games in the past, says Henry and Barron have put in hard work to earn their all-star selections.

“It’s been around since I was in high school. It’s a real cool and neat deal. They get to play in the Alamodome. It’s a real cool event. I got to go back to it again a few years ago when Devin (Matthews) played in it. So, they’ll have a lot of fun in it. And it’s just a testament to all the hard work both (Henry and Barron) have put in for their program and themselves.”

The San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game takes place on Saturday, January 11th at the Alamodome.

(Gonzales) — The Navarro Panthers will look to move up the District 13-4A standings when they travel to Gonzales tonight.

The Panthers are a half-game behind the Apaches, who currently sit in the 4th and final playoff spot in the district standings. Tonight’s game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Apache Field in Gonzales.

(Marion) — And the Marion Bulldogs along with the rest of District 13-3A have the night off tonight. The Bulldogs will return to district play at Ingram Moore next Friday.

We’ll have our High School Football Friday Night tonight on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage at 6:20 p.m. with the Navarro Panther report with Navarro coach Rod Blount.

And then we’ll head over to Ranger Stadium for our Seguin football pregame coverage where we’ll have more with Seguin coach Craig Dailey inside the Matador report. And then we’ll have the kickoff between Seguin and Smithson Valley for you at 7 O’clock tonight on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

(Converse) — There was one District 13-5A game last night as the Wagner Thunderbirds knocked off Victoria East 42-28 in Converse. The T-birds are now 2-2 in district, while the Titans fell to 1-3.

There are two other games in the district tonight:

New Braunfels is at Pieper. Both the Unicorns and Warriors are tied for first atop the district at 3-0.

And San Antonio MacArthur plays at Boerne Champion. One of those teams will win their first district game tonight. Both teams are 0-3.
