San Antonio Cole hands Marion first district loss

Marion junior Ellie Parker serves against San Antonio Cole at Marion High School on October 8, 2024.

(Marion) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs fell for the first time this season in District 27-3A play on Tuesday night.

San Antonio Cole came back from two sets down to rally past the Lady Bulldogs 19-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-7. Marion is now 3-1 in district after the loss.

Emily Sampson led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 kills. Madi Love punched through eight kills. Lailah Hernandez had five service aces while Bristin Birdwell and Ellie Parker contributed four aces a piece for Marion

Cole’s devastating front line was impressive, throwing down a number of smashes on the night. On the other end of the court, Birdwell had 32 digs defensively while Hernandez was active diving around the court coming up with 12 digs. Following the match, Marion head coach Mellissa Mitchell Schuetz talked about the Cole hitters and her team’s efforts to keep up lead by her back line of Birdwell and Hernandez.

“Her and Bristin were picking up stuff that nobody would think would be picked up,” Michetell Schuetz said. “We were just trying to create some kind of rift in what Cole had going on and we ran out of timeouts. But, I trust my defenders. It doesn’t matter who is out there and I know they are gonna come through one way or another.”

Marion will continue district play on Friday when they host Randolph. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Marion High School.
