Seguin opens district play against Victoria East at homecoming on KWED

(Seguin) — It’s the District 13-5A opener for the Seguin Matadors as they host the Victoria East Titans at homecoming tonight at Matador Stadium.

The Matadors are coming off an improbable comeback victory over Brazoswood last Thursday in Katy. Seguin trailed 30-7 at halftime and rallied back to stun the Buccaneers, 41-37.

Ian Moreno made his first start at running back and accounted for over 300 total yards and four touchdowns in the comeback. The junior was called on time and time again, running for 296 yards on 42 carries. Matador head football coach Craig Dailey said Moreno stepped up moving over from his usual safety position on defense.

“I’m super proud of him. We brought him after the Miller game and said ‘we need you to go to offense and light a spark at running back’ and he really stepped up to that challenge,” Dailey said. “I actually didn’t realize he had 42 carries (last week) until after the game, but he never said he was tired and it’s good to know we have someone who wants the football day in day out.”

Seguin is 1-2 on the season as they return home for the first time since week one. A homecoming crowd will be behind the Matadors tonight and Dailey says his team appreciates the support from the Seguin community.

“This community is awesome. They support us in all aspects, in fine arts, athletics, academics. You drive around town and the businesses are painted,” Dailey said. “I think we have four class reunions coming to the game. So, it’s an exciting time to showcase our kids in front of the alumni of Seguin High School.”

The Titans are also 1-2 on the season. Seguin and Victoria East meet at 7 O’clock tonight and you’ll hear all the action on KWED.

In other area games tonight:

(La Vernia) — The Navarro Panthers are at La Vernia tonight. It’s the final non-district game of the season for the Panthers before they open District 13-4A play next week at home against the 6th-ranked team in Class 4A Division II, the Wimberley Texans. Tonight’s game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at La Vernia High School.

(Marion) — And the Marion Bulldogs are hosting Lago Vista this evening for their second last non-district game of the season. The game kicks at 7 O’clock tonight at Veterans Stadium in Marion.

We’ll have week four of High School Football Friday Night tonight on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage at 6:15 p.m. with the Navarro Panther report with Navarro coach Rod Blount. The Panther report will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report with Marion coach Ryne Miller.

And then we’ll head over to Matador Stadium for our Seguin football pregame coverage where we’ll have more with coach Craig Dailey inside the Matador report. And then we’ll have the homecoming kickoff between Seguin and Victoria East from Matador Stadium at 7 O’clock tonight on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
