Seguin's Fiestas Patrias celebration set for Sunday

(Seguin) – Downtown Seguin this Sunday will be filled with plenty of live music, food and vendors.  In celebration of Diez y Seis de Septiembre, the Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will again be hosting its annual Fiestas Patrias celebration but this time on a Sunday.

Instead of hosting the event on the usual Friday or Saturday, Joe Rea, of the Hispanic chamber, says the group not only wanted to ensure the celebration but it also wanted to offer it on a less busy night.

“Usually on Sundays, people after church, they have the afternoon free, and they are always looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons and this is the earliest that we could have these people to come out and perform for us. That’s why we are doing it on Sunday and usually people on Sundays, they watch football, and they relax on Sunday afternoons, but this is a good chance for them to come out and enjoy the mariachis,” said Rea.

Rea says the community will be treated to fun family events including plenty of music.

“We are having Mariachi Jalisciense. We are also having Folklorico De La Rosa and DJ RG. We are going to have food, drinks, vendors and it’s free to the public,” said Rea.

Fiestas Patrias translates into “patriotic holiday” or “national holiday.” It is used to describe a series of celebrations that honor Mexico’s culture, independence or national pride.  Traditionally, the local celebration commemorates the Diez y Seis de Septiembre or the 16th of September. The event marks the launch of the Mexican War of Independence against Spain.

Fiesta Patrias will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Central Park. There is no cost to attend.
