Area high school football teams preparing for week two games

(Guadalupe County) — Area high school football teams are readying for week two match-ups Friday night.

The Seguin Matadors head to the Texas coast to take on Corpus Christi Miller. The Mats will look to even their record after a loss in week one at home to Alamo Heights.

The Buccaneers are 1-0. They were a 13-1 team in 2023. Friday night’s game kicks at 7 p.m. at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus and we’ll have the game here on KWED.

The Navarro Panthers are also on the road. The Panthers will take on the Antonian Prep Apaches in San Antonio.

Navarro won their opening week match-up with Floresville, 35-14 at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo. Dylan Trotti had 137 yards rushing for the Panthers in last week’s victory.

Navarro head coach Rod Blount says the Antonian defense will be a challenge for the Navarro Slot-T attack.

“Big guys from nose to both tackles and then behind them, they have speed and athleticism,” Blount said of the Apache defense. “Those guys fly around and cover the ground quick. Up front they’re tossing linemen to the side, so it’s gonna be important for us to do a great job carrying out our fakes and misdirection to slow that down.”

Friday’s game between the Panthers and the Antonian Apaches kicks off at 7 p.m at Antonian Prep High School in San Antonio.

Marion High School is celebrating Homecoming this week. The Bulldogs will host the New Braunfels Long Creek Dragons on Friday.

Marion fell, 34-28 on the road at Stockdale last week. Quarterback Kade Pape threw for three touchdowns and Jack Wells ran back a 90-yard kickoff for a score for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Marion head coach Ryne Miller says his team had some good things to build off of from last week’s game.

“We did a lot of great things and we showed the kids on tape the good things they did,” Miller said. “Jack Wells did a great job and Kade Pape came on in the second half and did well. Receivers Kaden Hernandez and Braeden Fleming were making plays. And our defense played well in the first half. We got a bunch of young guys. We got that first one under the belt and I know they’re ready to go now.”

Long Creek will be playing their second game in school history after beating Katy Freeman, 48-6 last Friday for the program’s first victory. Friday’s Marion Homecoming game between the Bulldogs and Dragons kicks off at 7 O’clock at Veterans Stadium in Marion.

We’ll have week two of High School Football Friday Night on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 on Friday evening. The Panther report will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.

And then we’ll head down to Corpus for our Seguin Matador pregame coverage where we’ll have the Matador report with Seguin head coach Craig Dailey inside the pregame. It all leads up to kickoff between Corpus Christi Miller and Seguin at 7 O’clock on Friday night from Buccaneer Stadium along the Texas coast right here on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
