(New Braunfels) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs battled back from one set down, to rally past New Braunfels Christian Academy in four sets on Tuesday night in New Braunfels.

Marion took the match over the Wildcats 23-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-13. The Bulldog back line led by junior captain Ellie Parker was instrumental in the victory.

Parker was active setting up her teammates with a number of assists. She also came up big, digging out some Wildcat smashes and gave the Lady Bulldogs a number of points on serve including a few aces. Fellow Marion captains senior Bristin Birdwell and junior Lailah Hernandez were also aggressive for the Lady Bulldog back line flying all over the court defensively.

Marion head coach Melissa Mitchell Schuetz talked about her three captains following Tuesday night’s win.

“Bristin, Lailah and Ellie, our three captains are defensive extraordinaires,” Mitchell Schuetz said. “We wouldn’t be half the team we are without those three. I get chills talking about our defense and setting. Losing Bristin (to graduation) will be a tough one, so I’m gonna take every advantage of her this year. I’m doing everything I can to keep them on the back line at all times.”

Marion will next host Luling as part of homecoming events at Marion High School on Friday evening.

In other action for area volleyball teams on Tuesday night, the Class 4A Navarro Lady Panthers fell at Class 6A Cibolo Steele in four sets. And the Seguin Lady Matadors improved to 2-0 in District 27-5A play with a straight sets victory at San Antonio Fox Tech.

Navarro will travel to Floresville for another non-district match on Friday. The Lady Matadors will look to improve to 3-0 in district when they host San Antonio Lanier Friday evening at Goldie Harris Gym.

The Marion Lady Bulldogs are taking on New Braunfels Christian Academy in New Braunfels tonight!
