Navarro takes down Cuero and Seguin to start 2024 high school volleyball season

The Navarro and Seguin volleyball teams battle at Navarro High School.

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Lady Panthers went 2-0 in opening the 2024 volleyball season on Monday night at Navarro High School.

In their first game, Navarro took down rival Cuero in a two hour five-set marathon 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9. In the final match, the Lady Panthers dispatched the Seguin Lady Matadors in four sets 28-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Navarro junior Avary Sisak was active as a setter, assisting hitters including senior Morgan Helms and junior Rylee Smith with perfect setups for kills throughout the night. Senior back line player Tegan Harborth covered the court well making several diving digs. And senior Kate Wozniak showed off her all-around game with set-ups, monster kills and a few drop serves that led to a number of Lady Panther points.

Navarro head coach Page Poth said Wozniak was asked to take on a larger role filling in for an injured teammate. Poth raved about Wozniak’s versatility after their victories.

“We can move her wherever we need her. She’s a great player to have with all the options that we have,” Poth said of Wozniak. “We can move her around and swing-wise, she can score on pretty much anything she gets. Even as a setter that we didn’t plan to have her at, she still runs an offense and gets us our win.”

The Lady Panthers next play in the Northeast Tournament in San Antonio. District 27-4A rivals Fredericksburg and Davenport will also be in the tourney. Navarro starts tournament play on Friday against San Antonio O’Connor.

Meanwhile, the Seguin Lady Matadors fell in both of their matches. Cuero defeated Seguin 27-25, 25-17, 25-22 in last night’s middle match. Senior Karina Lerma along with sophomores Britlyn Walls and Elli Anderson had strong performances on the night for Seguin.

The Lady Matadors will next play in the John Turner Classic in Pearland which gets underway on Thursday.

(Marion) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs will get their season underway tonight. Marion will host Canyon Lake. First serve is set for 6 O’clock this evening at Marion High School.
