Seguin Mayor gives Freedom Fiesta a thumbs-up

Celebration launches 4th of July festivities in Seguin

(Seguin) — The celebration of our nation’s independence is well underway in Seguin. Helping to launch the city’s nearly week-long schedule of festivities were the hundreds of folks who turned out Saturday night in downtown for Freedom Fiesta, the annual community celebration hosted by Seguin Radio KWED.

Folks came out Saturday night to enjoy food, live music, vendors, activities for kids, and plenty of other fun events.

Among those who stayed for the whole party was Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen.

Dodgen says Freedom Fiesta is a tradition for Seguin, and she says it was another huge success.

“Oh my gosh, it was incredible. So many food trucks so spread out. Music on different ends. Each different groups dancing all night long. It was really a lot of fun and it was a nice breeze even though it was really hot but it was great,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says this year’s Freedom Fiesta also welcomed another great Kiddie Parade hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women.

“I want to talk a little bit about the Kiddie Parade too. I think that that was really important. It’s so cute. It starts at 6 o’clock and every single year, those kids and their families go over and above and this year, it was precious,” said Dodgen.

Of course, Dodgen says Freedom Fiesta was only the start of what is going to be a bigger Fourth of July celebration in Seguin.

“And this just kicks things off for our week because we have the fireworks on the third and then we have the flag raising at 9 o’clock and then the parade and I know the River Monsters are playing on the third as well and you can watch the fireworks from there. There’s just all kinds of things happening. So, it just begins our week of fun,” said Dodgen.

With plenty of new faces now calling Seguin home, Dodgen wants to ensure that new residents know exactly the pride and celebration in their new hometown.

“I want them to know that the fun doesn’t stop and celebrating freedom doesn’t stop and that we begin the Saturday evening before the Fourth of July — it kicks things off and then there’s typically something happening all the time from there. Different organizations are doing different things from the veterans organizations to even some of the political candidates so there’s always things going on.

So, come on down and Central Park is kind of where it all starts often times and so come on down because I really think you will be amazed of what we do here in town,” said Dodgen.

In addition to Saturday’s Freedom Fiesta, another large crowd came out for day two of celebrations with this year’s Patriotic Concert held on Sunday night in Central Park.

Of course, the remaining events include the annual Fireworks Fiesta at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, in Starcke Park. Take your radios with you because KWED will provide patriotic music during the show. The Downtown Business Alliance sponsors the patriotic music for the fireworks show exclusively.

The celebration continues on Thursday, July 4. The annual flag raising ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Thursday in Central Park; and the city’s Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas begins at 10 a.m. Thursday on Austin Street in downtown Seguin.
