Local museum salutes military community this month

Doors open on the 4th of July for special exhibit

(Seguin) — The Seguin Heritage Museum will be opening its doors this Fourth of July to salute America and all those in Guadalupe County who have contributed to our freedom.

The museum is hosting a special Patriotic Display, bringing together a collection of military memorabilia from the past.

Donna Brawner, of the museum, says the exhibit contains a unique look at our local history, our liberty and those military heroes who we celebrate.

“When people walk in, they are going to see the most impressive, military, patriotic exhibit featuring all the branches. It’s also featuring heroes from Guadalupe County that served in the World Wars. We also have a list of all of the personnel that served in the World Wars but mainly what is so interesting is the artifacts we have that people have brought in and contributed. Not only do we have the uniforms, but we have the medals. We have German helmets, Japanese helmets, of course, American helmets and it’s fascinating to see the evolution of our military from World War I going to Calvary charges against tanks to all the way through the Afghanistan War and it’s just a part of Seguin history that I think people would really be interested to see and know. We are also putting out military pictures of former Guadalupe County military personnel. We are also providing a lot of history with each exhibit,” said Brawner.

Brawner says although the exhibit will remain in place throughout July, the museum is asking that locals also share the invite to those in town for the 4th of July holiday. She says it also makes for a unique experience before and after this year’s parade in downtown Seguin.

She hopes to attract even more locals to the museum. She says they each have their own incredible stories and experiences.

“And we would also encourage citizens to please come tell us your stories. We want to start archiving your stories and this would be a perfect chance to get your feet wet,” said Brawner.

She adds that the museum also has a number of military photos that need to be identified and hopes that the public can come out and help.

“We also need some military pictures identified from World War Il and World War I. So, if you come in, we’d really appreciating seeing if you can identify any of these people for us,” said Brawner.

Hours are Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, the museum this Thursday, July 4 will be open a little longer allowing for more folks to come in and enjoy the display.

While there is no cost, donations are encouraged at the door.  The Heritage Museum is located at 114 N. River St.
